Workshop on

‘Testing of Soil & Highway Materials’
21–22nd October 2012

 

 

A two day National Workshop on ‘Testing of Soil & Highway Materials’ was organized during October 21-22, 2012 by the Department of Civil Engineering, Jaypee University of Engineering and Technology, Guna (M.P.). The Workshop was inaugurated and presided by Project Director NHAI Guna circle Shri I. M. Siddiqui ji and Col. (Retd) A. K. Bhasin ji respectively; welcome and introductory address was given by Chairman of Workshop Prof. K. K. Jain and Coordinator Dr. Sumit Gandhi. The inaugural event enlighten by inspirational speech by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. N. J. Rao and by Shri. S. H. Mankad (Sr. Vice-President, Jaypee Group) on the theme of workshop.

The workshop was aimed to bring together practicing engineer, academicians and students to share information about testing procedure and related research. Its objective is to enhance the knowledge of engineers involved in Civil Engineering activities on the following aspect: Awareness about the need and importance of laboratory testing of soil & highway materials; Recent advancements in material testing; University-Industry interaction in civil engineering activities; Sustainable & innovative technology and to Enhance the knowledge towards realistic challenges in the state of art areas. 

A total of 37 participants from various government and non-government organization such as NHAI, RES Guna, WRD Guna, L & T, GVK, PIES Indore, SATI Vidisha, IES Bhopal, ITM Gwalior and JUET Guna participated in the program. Various sessions were covered successfully through seven keynote lectures, two laboratory sessions (one each for soil & highway materials) and interaction sessions. Laboratory manuals of some important tests were also provided to the participants. Following are the seven keynote lectures was delivered:

Very detailed information about testing of highway materials are discussed regarding aggregate properties like strength, toughness, hardness, durability, etc. and bitumen properties such as: penetration test, softening point test, flash & fire point test, ductility test, sp. gravity and many more. Few test of bitumen and soil were demonstrated like: Los angles, Flakiness elongation test, Masharall Stability test, Penetration test, Ductility test, Ring and ball test, Benkalman beam test, Impact test, In-situ density, Permeability test, Sp. gravity test, Sieve analysis, Consolidation test, CBR, Triaxial test, Unconfined compression test, Vane shear test, etc.
